Who Else Wants To Know How To Spot A Gifted Or Talented Kid?

July 3rd, 2008

Some parents claim that their children are gifted or talented. They talk about how great their kids are, how smart they are. They describe all the pluses of their beloved daughter or son. He/she can do this and that.

But hey, seems like your kids can do the same thing as well. Are they also as talented? You might wonder.

How is it to spot a gifted or talented kid?

Your kids might be talented if:

• They show great and quite early development in linguistics. They can speak before they are one year old. And the development of their vocabulary is amazing for their age.

• They have such a huge curiosity over anything. They ask a lot and won’t be satisfied with only simple answers.

• They enjoy puzzles, mazes, and numbers more than just other toys. Their preference is mostly educational toys.

• They have extraordinary memory. They remember mostly anything that you might have forgotten.

• They enjoy learning anything. And, they have a great speed in learning. You don’t have to ask them to study or do their homework, they would have done it by the time you ask them.

• They have such a high energy level. They don’t get tired easily. They would keep moving.

• They show interest in a particular matter. For example, math. They don’t only get great grades but also enjoy doing it. Or, they ask for a certain kind of musical instrument even before they can read and easily master it.

Those are some examples of how talented or gifted children are. If your kids show the same behavior it would be better if you don’t neglect it.

As parents, you should be able to help your children manage their talent or gift. Yet, after you find it out, don’t push them either.

Also, never push them to do something they don’t like. It’s better if you let them choose to master what they like doing.

Kid Time And Couple Time

July 2nd, 2008

Summary: Are you having trouble finding time to be with your children and to be with each other? Discover how important this balance is, and what may be the underlying issue in the way of couple time.

A reader emailed me the following question:

“Many dads and moms, especially those that work full-time, are torn by guilt when it comes to time allocation. They have been away from the kids so long during the working week that the weekends MUST be spent with them. Result: There is simply NO couple-time. Any suggestions?”

One thing that is often not realized by parents is that a happy and harmonious marriage is one of the greatest gifts they can give to their children. Most children will gladly spend less time with their parents when they know that some of the time being spent away from them is about creating and maintaining a loving relationship between their parents.

Parents who work full time do need to be sure to spend some quality time with their children each evening. I was in this position when I was raising my three children. My husband and I would each spend an hour each evening, sometimes with one child and sometimes with two. On the weekends, we set aside some time alone with each other and alone with ourselves, which our children learned to respect. Then we spent the rest of the time in family time. Parents need to understand that they are the role models for their children, and if they are not taking responsibility for their own needs, their children will not learn to take responsibility for their own needs. What we role model regarding personal responsibility for our own happiness and wellbeing is as important as spending time with our children. Both are equally important in raising healthy children.

When parents do not find the time to be with each other or to be alone with themselves, they may need to examine what else might be going on within themselves and in the relationship. Are they using their work and their children to avoid themselves and each other? If their time alone or together is not fulfilling, then work time and kid time can be ways of filling an inner emptiness. Or, the time problems might be a result of unexamined priorities.

We all tend to do what is truly important to us. If work is important to us, then we may work a lot. If parenting is important to us, then we might spend lots of time with our children. If our creative pursuits, hobbies, or sports are important to us, then we will find time for them. The same is true for our relationship. If it is very important to us, we will find the time for it. So, if parents are not finding the time to be together, they might want to examine their priorities and explore why time together might not be important.

Often time together is important to one partner and not to the other. When this is the case, partners need to explore what is happening between them that is leading to the one partner not making time together a high priority. Some of the issues you may want to examine are:

* Is one partner fearful of being pulled on for sex?

* Is one partner fearful of being pulled on to fill up the other partner emotionally?

* Does one partner feel fearful of being criticized in various ways when they are alone together?

* Is one partner emotionally unavailable and the other partner feels lonely with him or her when they are alone together?

* Has one partner become so preoccupied with being successful or making money that they no longer have anything to talk about?

* If fun lacking in the relationship?

* Does one partner feel resistant to being controlled by the other partner?

* Is one partner resenting the imbalance regarding work, chores and childcare?

* Is one partner feeling angry or withdrawn? If so, why?

If the real reason for not spending time together is truly about not enough time, then you need to consider how you can get help, such as hiring a neighborhood teenager, to do some chores or spend some time with young children.

If spending time together is a high priority, you can find a way!

Scrapbooking Punch: Rediscover The Kid In You

June 30th, 2008

Scrapbooking has been one of the prime activities that we as schoolchildren had indulged in. In fact, today also when we look back at the scrapbooks that we had managed to maintain, it seems so much fun and interesting. Unfortunately, with time and the adding up of responsibilities, we have tended to move away from scrapbooking. However, with the advent of internet, scrapbooking has again become interesting and a good thing to do. With web portals coming up with the idea of scrapbooking punch, scrapbooking is again back with all its charm. Scrapbooking is basically a method for preserving a legacy of written history in the form of photographs, printed media, and memorabilia contained in decorated albums, or scrapbooks. In the times gone by, scrapbooking was a tradition similar to storytelling; however, with the advent of time the modes of scrapbooking have also evolved.

With a scrapbooking punch, you can definitely add some unique features to any scrapbooking page. There are so many different scrapbooking punch projects to select from that you may not know which ones to start your collection with. Luckily, each scrapbooking punch only costs a couple of dollars so you will be able to purchase quite a few of them. They are becoming quite a popular trend for different types of scrapbooking page. There are quite a few scrapbooking punch kits and sets available as well. This is a great way to have a variety of different scrapbooking punch projects while saving money over buying them separately.

A scrapbooking punch resembles a miniature staple. It is used to punch out various designs on your paper or other material that you plan to use an as overlay. A scrapbooking punch can be in the design of a shape, animal, design such as stars, or any other format you can imagine. You will find the same design of scrapbook punch in a variety of sizes as well. It is very simple to use a scrapbooking punch, and fast too. Simply line the punch up on the paper where you want the design to be and gently press down on the scrapbook punch. You will get perfect looking designs every time without any effort at all. They are a perfect option for younger children who are interested in scrapbooking too.

There are n numbers of websites that facilitate online scrapbooking and trust me - you can create your own scrapbooking web pages. In addition, if you once start online scrapbooking, you will remain hooked to it. For the best results with a scrapbooking punch, you should purchase the best quality ones. You do not want to use cheap imitations that do not successfully complete the entire cut out on the design because it somehow destroys the entire scrapbooking that you had managed to create. You may also want to purchase long reach models of scrapbooking punch projects. This way you can reach all areas of the scrapbooking page. Scrapbooking being a hobby is great fun to indulge in and the best part is that while you maintain your scrapbook, you will rediscover the kid in you.

Easy Kid Recipes In A Flash

June 24th, 2008

It’s 6:00 p.m. You’ve just gotten home from soccer practice, homework needs to be done, house is a mess and you have no clue what to make for dinner… what do you do?

The good news is you’re not alone, this is a common scenario in many households and it’s often the time when we pick up the phone and order a pizza or grab some fast food at the drive thru on the way home. But it really doesn’t have to be this way. If you’re looking for ways to save money on food while feeding your family healthier meals then quick and easy homemade meals are the way to go.

Here are some tips to help you prepare a few easy kid recipes in no time:

Stock your fridge and pantry with healthy easy to prepare foods. Pasta, couscous, noodles and baked beans are great quick meal options to have on hand. Frozen vegetables are often healthier for you since they are frozen before they loose much of their vitamin content and are really great for days when you’re in a rush. You can get all types of options ranging from a carrot, broccoli and peas mix to frozen mixed peppers and stir fry vegetables.

Keep in minds that meals don’t have to be fancy or take hours to cook to be nutritious. A simple scrambled eggs with baked beans and whole wheat toast is a healthy and easy meal option… ready in under 10 minutes.
Or boil some pasta and mix with a little chopped ham, olive oil and halved cherry tomatoes. Top with some parmesan cheese and serve with a side of garlic bread and a quick salad… ready in under 15 minute.

When you have a little more time place a couple of salmon fillets in the oven. While that’s cooking prepare some couscous, mix in a little lemon juice and olive oil. Boil some frozen vegetables. And you have a quick healthy and nutritious dinner… ready in under 20 minutes.

And for the days that you’re really, really rushed and just don’t feel like cooking. How about a cheese sandwich and lettuce sandwich on whole wheat bread, some carrot sticks, pretzels and a few raisins. Dinner doesn’t always have to look like dinner, of course, it’s nice and necessary for your kids to have some hot home cooked dinners but once in a while a healthy sandwich will do the trick just fine.

An Amazing Kid’s Kite Party

June 22nd, 2008

A kite Party” at any time always stirs up young’s boy heart, especially during windy march season. This is the best way of celebrating a very special birthday of your young boy, who luckily was born in this season.

“Gee Mom; March is a punk month for a birthday. You can’t have a sleigh ride because the snow’s gone. You can’t have a picnic ’cause it’s too cold. I wish my birthday came some other month.”

Nine-year-old Chuck pressed his snub nose against the windowpane as he looked out at the bleak day. “If it were near the end of March maybe the weather would be halfway decent but March 6th that’s awful.”

“We can always have an indoor party and play games, Chuck,” I suggested brightly. “Yeah we’ve done that at every birthday party all winter. The fellows are all tired of that.”
“There must be something we can do for the boys on your birthday that would be fun.” We both looked out at the tree tops bending low in the strong March wind. I had a thought. It’ll soon be kite time. “Chuck, why not have a kite party?”

Chuck looked up with a pleased grin. “A kite party! What’d you know? Well it’s different anyway. What’s the idea?”

That was the beginning of Chuck’s kite party given in the blustery month of March, when it’s too raw and disagreeable to give a party outside and yet not wintry enough for a skating or sleigh-ride party. “First come the invitations. Let’s have them different too.” Chuck had forgotten his disgust and the plans were on. From the dime store we bought white cards three by five inches and cut them kite-shaped. The invitations read:
Kite time is here. Come to Chuck’s party Friday night after school.

An address and stamp on the reverse side and the invitations were ready for the mail. Curiosity ran high with the crowd. What was going to happen? This sounds like fun. Ahead of party time Chuck bought a supply of balsam wood from which he cut thin strips to be used for the frames. Then we laid in a supply of bright-colored crepe paper, a jar of paste and plenty of strong string. We were all set for the excited crowd that arrived breathlessly after school. On birthday party nights boys always run all the way from school to get to the party quickly. No time to waste when a party is on.

As soon as the boys had gathered Chuck showed his guests a kite he had made as an experiment and then told the boys if they would like to build kites the “makings” were in the basement. In less time than it takes to tell the crowd was downstairs looking over the material, fingering the saws and setting up shop on a sturdy apple crate.

As kite time started all the boys run to the party place and made their own kite with a great excitement. The Kite party in windy season chill them out with excitement.

The Roth 401(k) - New Kid In Town

June 19th, 2008

A traditional 401k plan is an arrangement under tax law by which an employer can deduct pre-tax money from your paycheck and the employee can invest it. In a traditional 401k this money is nontaxable until you withdraw it, at which time you will likely be in a lower tax bracket.

Those who are looking into retirement savings plans should also take not of the Roth 401k that became effective in 2006. The Roth 401k is a hybrid between the traditional 401k and the Roth IRA, and was legislated in George W. Bush’s tax cut package. It operates differently than the traditional 401k plan. Below is an explanation of the pros and cons of the Roth 401k:
The bad news:
- Favorable tax treatment limited to those who are disabled, or at least 59.5 years old, or who have held the account for more than 5 years

- it is not available to taxpayers with an income above a certain level at the time their account is opened.

- There is no upfront tax deduction

- employees whose employers do not offer Roth 410k plans are ineligible

- Not many employers offer Roth 401k plans because it is new, and because it is expensive to introduce.

The good news:

- Any employee whose employer offers the plan is eligible.

- Withdrawals taken after retirement are no subject to income tax

- It can be rolled over into a Roth IRA if you quit your job.

- There is no loss of eligibility for if your income exceeds maximum eligibility limits after your account is opened.

- Because of the deferred tax benefits, Roth 401k accounts can appreciate faster than a traditional plan, leading to higher retirement income.

This structure makes the Roth 401k suitable for youth who expect their income to grow over time. A traditional 401k plan will leave you more money now, but a Roth 401k will leave you better off after retirement.

How To Be Sure Your Kid Survives Prom Night

June 10th, 2008

Like driving a car and going off to college, attending a high school prom is one of life’s defining moments on the road to adulthood. You probably still recall your own excitement at attending your own prom even though it may have been decades ago and the giddy feelings of anticipation of what it would be like to experience adult things like dressing up in formalwear and partying all night with your classmates.

Now that you are a parent, prom season can take on a different image – kids who have had too much to drink getting behind the wheel of a car, falling asleep while driving, having sex because they think “everyone is doing it” and getting into other mischief because truth be told, today’s proms require parents to be more vigilant than ever before.

Here are some tips for negotiating the fine line between letting your teenage son and daughter enjoy some extra freedom and keeping them safe.

Bend but Don’t Break:

You want your teenager to have a good time on prom night that he or she will fondly recall for years to come. To achieve that, some of your usual rules will probably have to be suspended for one night only such as how late he or she can stay out. If there are aspects about your teen’s prom plans that disturb you ask yourself this question: Is it distressing or dangerous? If you judge something to be dangerous, then stand firm. If it is distressing you might be able to live with it this time.

Make Sure You Know the Plan:

Is the school sponsoring an after party? Are some parents allowing their kids to rent a hotel room or to have a co-ed sleepover? Would it be better if you had the teens come back to your house? Knowing the details as well as who your teen’s friends are and how responsible they are will help you know what type of boundaries you will have to set to feel comfortable. Co-ed sleepovers may not be as bad as they sound provided that the teens are not romantically involved with each other but the hotel room idea has danger written all over it.

Don’t Assume Good Kids Can Handle Risky Situations.

If your teen has never gotten into trouble, you might be fooled into thinking he or she will know what to do when faced with the unexpected. You could be wrong. For your own peace of mind I recommend role playing situations that could occur during prom night. For example, ask your daughter what she would do if the date driving her home was drunk. If you do this in a non-threatening manner, you will be amazed at the response that you get from your child and can then offer your own suggestions for what they might do in that situation. You might say, “Gosh, if that were me, I might say, ‘I’m not feeling good. I think I’m going to be sick. I’m going to call my mom and dad to take me home.’” In this case you would be giving your daughter permission to lie in order to get out of a dangerous situation.

If you have taken the steps I have outlined, when prom night rolls around your only concern will be finding the camera to take photographs of your very adult-looking son or daughter heading off into a night to remember.

A Wealth Of Kid Hobby Ideas

June 10th, 2008

Every young person needs a hobby. An interesting kid hobby will help children learn as well as keep them entertained for hours. It might even help them stay away from a bad peer group and stay out of trouble. Some kids might think of video games or TV as an appropriate kid hobby, but most parents would like to see their kids doing something more challenging or educational.

A good kid hobby is playing a musical instrument. The guitar can often be self-taught from a book if a child has the interest, but for piano playing or other instruments, you will probably have to invest in lessons. Practice is, of course, an essential part of mastering any musical instrument.

Another type of kid hobby is pursuing an art or a craft. Kids can learn to draw, paint, or make scrapbook pages. They can learn needle arts, such as embroidery, sewing, knitting or crocheting. Beginning carpentry is a very useful kid hobby that may turn into a career, or at least skills that will be used for a lifetime.

Tinkering around on gas engines or electronics is another kid hobby that can lead to useful skills.

There are all sorts of things that kids might like to collect for a hobby. Some of the more common collections are of stamps, coins, and rocks. Stamps are interesting because they can be from many different countries, becoming a geography lesson. Coins and stamps both are of historical significance, and encourage reading to learn more about different eras in history. Rock collecting as a kid hobby requires looking into science books.

Other collectibles include bean bag toys or figurines of a certain thing, such as owls, frogs, or unicorns. Anything a child has an interest in can be collected. If a kid is interested in dolphins, for instance, she may not only collect dolphin figurines and posters, but also be motivated to read books about dolphins.

Construction sets also make a good pastime for kids. Many people may think of these only as toys, but children who have grown up with these sets and added components to them down through the years can create some pretty impressive models. They are also gaining skills in reasoning and perception as they build.

Making model, such as cars, boats, and airplanes, has always been a popular kid hobby. If your child is interested in making models, be very encouraging in the beginning. Model car kits can be very complicated and require a great deal of precision. If your child’s first few creations leave a little bit to be desired, don’t laugh or scold, or he is likely to never want to try to make anything again! Get the easiest kit he is willing to make and then patiently help him as much as needed.

Many kids enjoy sports, making any athletic activity a great kid hobby. Soccer, basketball, and little league baseball all come to mind, but don’t forget about track and field events. Maybe your child would enjoy distance running or gymnastics. An active kid hobby will help your child stay in shape as well as make an interesting pastime.

How To Make Kid’s Birthday Invitations

June 5th, 2008

Creating a birthday invitation for your kid’s birthday party is easy and affordable. Plus creating your own birthday invitations makes it even more meaningful for your child since you have taken extra effort in making his or her birthday even more special. You can make attractive birthday invitations that are even more beautiful compared to those commercially bought birthday cards by simply applying a few very simple desktop publishing and design principles. Simply follow these ten simple steps to make not only birthday invitations but also other types of greeting cards.

Here are the steps involved in creating birthday invitations:

1. Make sure to use an appropriate software

There are various software programs used for creating birthday invitations as well as other types of greeting cards. These include: PageMaker, InDesign, PhotoShop, and other professional desktop publishing software. However, if you are new to desktop publishing and your main concern is to create your very own birthday invitations or greeting cards, consumer software is an easier way to go. Be sure to familiarize yourself with some of the basic operations before you actually begin your project.

2. Better to pick a birthday invitation format

Before you actually decide on the kind of birthday invitation that you want to do, be it funny, serious, oversized, top fold, side fold, and even personalized, it is important that you have a vision of the design that you want to create. This can help you in speeding up the designing process of your invitations, even if you are using templates straight from the software.

3. Try to set up an invitation document

If you are going to use a blank template or wizard for the style of birthday invitation you want, use it to set up your birthday invitation. You may also create a layout from scratch using your desired size. For a top or side-fold card, printed on letter size paper, it is best to create a folded dummy and then mark the front, inside front, message area then finally the back of the greeting card.

4. Choose the graphics for your birthday invitation

If you prefer to have a simple birthday invitation it is easier to stick with one image or a few simple icon-like figures. If you prefer to use less realistic clipart, you may end up with a more cartoonish appearance. Unleash your creativity and make use of color and lines. All of these contribute to the overall style of the birthday invitation. Likewise, mix and match images that share a similar style.

5. Modify the images

There are some graphics that work without modification but requires simple changes in terms of size and color that can improve any birthday invitation layout. You can also use color and frames or boxes with dissimilar images in order to come up with a more unified appearance.

6. Select a font that would best suit your birthday invitation

Chose your font to best suit the type of invitation you’re sending out.

7. Arrange text and graphics

Play about with the text and graphics until you find a layout that works best with your chosen graphics and font style and size.

8. Create consistency in the look and feel of your birthday invitation.

Try to keep your invitation simple with clean lines for maximum effect. Too many conflicting styles, fonts and pictures look messy and can detract from the actual purpose of the invitation.

9. Add a credit line

Put a credit line on the back of your created birthday invitation. You may place your name to show that you were the one who took the effort in creating the birthday invitation that they are now admiring.

10. Proofread and print your birthday invitations.

It is important to do a final proofread before printing your birthday invitation on an expensive specialty paper.
